Aljawhara Aladba

A Qatari non-fiction filmmaker, media researcher, and educator working at the intersection of documentary practice, visual ethnography, and digital culture in the region.

After graduating from Northwestern University in Qatar in 2021, Aljawhara began her career in education, integrating communication tools and media literacy into the classroom. Experiencing the transformative power of teaching firsthand sparked a lifelong commitment to mentorship; one that continues to drive her vision of bringing world-class media pedagogy directly to young women in the Gulf who may not have the opportunity to study abroad.

To refine her creative practice, Aljawhara earned her M.A. in News and Documentary from New York University. Immersed in New York City’s fast-paced media landscape, she produced ground-level non-fiction stories across diverse communities, exploring complex themes of identity, resilience, and representation. Her filmmaking challenges reductionist stereotypes, utilizing an empathetic lens to amplify stories that often go untold.

Currently preparing for doctoral research, Aljawhara investigates how female filmmakers and digital creators across the Gulf region utilize social video platforms to reframe their agency, navigate cultural visibility, and bypass traditional broadcast archetypes. For Aljawhara, filmmaking and scholarship are inseparable: they are tools of advocacy, digital archiving, and cross-cultural dialogue designed to empower the next generation of Arab media makers.
